Melvin L. Ford III, DDS

Dr. Melvin L. Ford has been a partner with Oral Surgery of Tidewater since 1995. He is a graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where he received a bachelor’s degree with honors in chemistry. In 1982, he received his D.D.S. from the Medical College of Virginia (MCV), and in 1990, he completed his residency in oral and maxillofacial surgery with the U.S. Air Force Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Ford is a diplomat of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology.He has been appointed to the position of Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology (ENT/Head & Neck Surgery) at Eastern Virginia Medical School (EVMS). Dr. Ford is educated and trained to render appropriate oral care to his patients. His special interests include Obstructive Sleep Apnea and coordinated orthodontic surgical care. Dr. Ford is a former director of the Division of Oral Medicine at EVMS and is currently an assistant professor or Oral & Facial Surgery at VCU. He is a member of numerous local and national medical and dental societies. Dr. ford is a retired Captain in the U.S. Navy Reserve and U.S. Air Force. He was mobilized during Desert Shield and Desert Storm, where he provided extensive care to our troops. Dr. Ford and his family reside in Chesapeake. When not in the office, Dr. Ford enjoys playing the flute and saxophone, running, and fishing.


Klaus D. Guter, DDS

Dr. Guter is a native of Bogota, Colombia, South America. He grew up in Ohio and joined our practice in 2001. Dr. Guter graduated from Ohio State University, as well as the Ohio State University College of Dentistry, where he graduated with honors and received his D.D.S. degree. Dr. Guter entered the U.S. Navy and received his oral and maxillofacial surgical training as the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. He is a diplomate and a member of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. Dr. Guter is an also an active member of various dental and medical societies, and he is a former director of the Division of Oral Medicine at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Outside of the office, Dr. Guter enjoys golfing and traveling.


James A. Gray, DDS

Dr. James Gray came to Oral Surgery of Tidewater in 2014 with extensive and comprehensive training. After completing his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University, he attained his D.D.S. degree at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. He then completed his residency for Oral and Facial Surgery at Harlem Hospital, in affiliation with Columbia University in New York, New York.After completing his residency and with a special interest in dento-facial deformities, Dr. Gray pursued a surgical fellowship in orthognathic surgery. He was given the special privilege of working under the direction of world-renowned surgeon Dr. Jeffery C. Posnick as an orthognathic surgical fellow at the Posnick Center for Facial Plastic Surgery in Chevy Chase, Maryland, with clinical privileges at Georgetown University Hospital.Dr. Gray’s surgical interests include full-scope oral and facial surgery with particular interests in jaw corrective surgery, dental implants, and advanced grafting for dental implants. Dr. Gray is committed to providing his patients with the utmost care while utilizing the latest technology.

When away from the office, Dr. Gray enjoys traveling, art, music, reading, and singing. He also enjoys weight training and spending time with family and friends.
